++PULLDOWN++

What It Does

The ++PULLDOWN++ widget displays a pulldown menu titled "Browse..." with a scrolling list of context-appropriate sections or subsections of the site. Selecting one of the menu items takes the user to the main page of the selected section or subsection.

The ++PULLDOWN++ widget is context-sensitive and has a different display depending on the location of the page on which it is displayed:

  • Homepage. The pulldown contains a list of the main sections of the site.
  • Main section page. If the section has subsections, the list of links points to the main page of each subsection. If the section has no subsections, then ++PULLDOWN++ optionally displays the main sections instead.
  • Subsection index page. The list of links points to all of the subsection's "sibling" subsections -- that is, all of the subsections in the same main section. If there are no subsections, then ++PULLDOWN++ optionally displays the main sections instead.
  • Article page. The same display as the subsection index page: the list of links points to all of the "sibling" subsections of the current subsection. If there are no subsections, then ++PULLDOWN++ optionally displays the main sections instead.

NOTE: The ++BROWSEMORE++ widget displays similar content but as a list of links instead of a pulldown menu.

The Markup Results

The ++PULLDOWN++ widget is a block element contained in a <form> tag. The <select> tag for the pulldown menu includes an onchange attribute that calls an external JavaScript routine to take the visitor to the selected section/subsection page.

Customizing This Widget

Users with administrator or webmaster privileges can customize the ++PULLDOWN++ widget in the "Site Navigation" panel of the site's widget settings. The relevant setting is under the heading "BROWSEMORE and PULLDOWN options":

  • If no subsections to display, show main sections instead. If you leave this option unchecked, the ++PULLDOWN++ widget will be empty on main sections, subsections and article pages in all main sections that contain no subsections.

Styles

The ++PULLDOWN++ widget does not use any styles.
