++VNAV++

What It Does

The ++VNAV++ widget creates a vertical text navigation bar for the main sections of your site.

The ++VNAV++ widget also highlights the section in which the user is currently located, and highlights the other section links when the cursor passes over them.

The Markup Results

The ++VNAV++ widget can be generated in one of two forms depending on your "Site Navigation" widget settings (see below).

  • No table. The widget is a set of block elements: Each subsection link is enclosed in its own <div> tag.
  • Table. The widget is a block element contained in a <table> tag. The width and cell padding of the table is controlled by the widget settings.

Templates Using This Widget

This widget can be used in all page templates:

  • Homepage
  • Main section page
  • Subsection index page
  • Article page

Customizing This Widget

Users with webmaster or administrator accounts can customize this widget in the "Site Navigation" section of the widget editor. To get there, click the "Widget Settings" link in the left-column menu of the Big Medium control panel. The following settings affect the ++VNAV++ widget:

  • Include link to homepage in main navigation. Checking this link includes the homepage in the navigation bar.
  • Text for homepage link. This determines the word or phrase used for the homepage link in the navigation bar. This is only relevant if you have checked the option to include the homepage in main navigation.
  • Highlight color for active section. This determines the color used to highlight the section in which the user is currently located as well as the rollover highlight when the cursor passes over section links. This color must be in hexadecimal format (click here for a list of hexadecimal codes for web-safe colors).
  • "Button" padding. This determines the cell padding (the amount of space around the text links) for the text navigation bar.
  • Use tables for vertical text-based navigation. Checking this option makes Big Medium use the table format for the ++VNAV++ widget.
  • Table width for vertical text-based navigation. If you choose to use the table format for the ++VNAV++ widget, this setting determines the width of the table. This may be a percentage or a straight number.

In addition, section editor settings determine whether individual main sections are included in the ++VNAV++ widget. For more information, check the section status help file.

Styles

The section links in the ++VNAV++ widget are displayed in the "Navigation Menu Links" style, which may be edited by webmasters or administrators in the site's styles editor.
