Community Childhood Wellness Coalition Did you know that Illinois ranks tenth highest in the nation for Childhood Obesity? According to a report released last summer by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 20.4 percent of our state’s children ages 10-17 are overweight or obese. Upon learning this alarming fact, Passavant Area Hospital initiated a Community Childhood Wellness Coalition. The goal of this group is to create a partnership of community leaders from government agencies, schools, churches, day care providers, healthcare providers, and other local businesses to work together and create awareness, education, and programs devoted to physical fitness, nutrition and weight management for children and their parents.
We hope that all agencies will join us in sending the common message that health management is crucial. The group has adopted the framework from the national “Let’s Move” campaign which encourages physical activity, healthy food choices, education, awareness, and the promotion of readily available and affordable fruits and vegetables.
Any individual or agency interested in being a part of this group may call the Educational Services Department at Passavant, 245-9541, extension 3296, for more information on monthly meetings.
