  • DHS’s Division of Rehabilitation Services is the state’s lead agency serving individuals with disabilities. DRS works in partnership with people with disabilities and their families to assist them in making informed choices to achieve full community participation through employment, education, and independent living opportunities.

  • Twenty school districts hold membership in the Special Education District. It is the purpose of this district to provide special education classes for Special Education students and to provide technical assistance for the member district.
  • For school age children, referrals are usually made through the local school district. A multi-disciplinary team determines eligibility for services after thorough screenings and assessments.

Illinois School for the Deaf

  • The mission of the school is to educate students who are deaf or hard of hearing to be responsible and self-supporting citizens
  • The School provides comprehensive programming for deaf or hard of hearing parent-infant through grade 12 children. Also provided are comprehensive residential and after-school recreation programs, counseling, social services staff, audiological, psychological, vocational evaluation, school-to-work, cooperative education, vocational technology education, and extracurricular programs including sports. A one-week summer institute is offered for parents of preschool children who are deaf. Early intervention services and hearing and vision connections with service providers that are specifically sensory trained and available to go to the children’s homes or towns in Illinois. Various types of one-week camps are held during the summer.
  • The School is in continuous session, except for scheduled vacations, from the fourth week of August through the last week of May.

  • Serves people with mental, sensory, physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities. Consumers of any age are provided with our services free of charge.
  • Information and referral, peer counseling, independent living skills training, individual and systems advocacy, training for personal assistants and the people who employ them, disability awareness training, and accessibility consultation. Services to youth and their families; assistance for people with disabilities who are under 60 years old and wish to move out of a nursing home (community reintegration); free adaptive equipment and training for people 55 and older with visual disabilities.
